Deforestation

Deforestation means the permanent destruction of indigenous forests and woodlands. At the same time it does not include the removal of industrial forests such as plantations of gums or pines, which are cultivated specially by the industries. Deforestation has resulted in the reduction of indigenous forests to four-fifth of their pre-agricultural areas. Indigenous forests presently covers only  21% of the earth's land surface. There are various consequences of deforestation.
"About one half of the forests that covered the Earth are gone. Each year, another 16 million hectares disappear. The World Resources Institute estimates that only about 22% of the world's (old growth) original forest cover remains "intact" - most of this is in three large areas: the Canadian and Alaskan boreal forest, the boreal forest of Russia, and the tropical forest of the northwestern Amazon Basin and the Guyana Shield (Guyana, Suriname, Venezuela, Columbia, etc.) "
It is true that the way deforestation is taking place a time will come where thee will be only 1% of the trees will be left.  That will the end of the world.  Still the people are so casual towards it. It is not only about deforestation but also the impact it is having on the wildlife. The main effect is the loss of biodiversity and the loss of different type of species of animals.
Brazilian deforestation is correlated with the economic health of the country, the decline in deforestation from 1988-1991 has matched the economic slowdown, while the rocketing rate of deforestation from 1993-1998 paralleled  with the Brazil's period of rapid economic growth. This was proved by a research. This shows that deforestation is also associated with the  economic growth of the country.
Same is in case of India as in India there are still many group of people who earn their livelihood with the help of the forests. This has a vice versa effect as they cut down tress and sell them, this in turn causes deforestation.
So, it is high time that we start to plant tress and try to protect the existing ones.
